I would like to point out that Prop 8 was kicked in the pants by California, and Statute 3 of DOMA was elbowed aside by the Supreme Court.
These are both amazingly amazing things.
And no, as has been pointed out, this does not solve all the issues of the LGBT community, especially those who are not White and/or upper-middle-class.
And no, as it’s also been pointed out, this does not make up for the ugly-nasty decision on the Voting Rights Act.
However. It is still a Big Fucking Deal. Same-sex marriage doesn’t fix ALL OF the problems, but it fixes A LOT OF the problems, and it is a step in the right direction. As long as we’re moving in that direction, I’m going to celebrate. If the movement is slow and halting and incomplete, it is STILL movement in the right direction, and I am still glad of it.
Go have a drink on me, kids. This is incredible news.
